About Us
Céire Broderick
Dr Céire Broderick is a lecturer in Latin American Studies. She researches feminist cultural activists whose work contributes to the struggles against socio-historical and geopolitical challenges. Her monograph and previous publications focus on feminist readings of marginalisation in Chilean culture. She has published on the experience of constituting and participating in a Community of Practice. Her recent article ‘Insurgent bodies in cultural responses to reproductive justice in Chile and Ireland’ combines her passion for cultural activism with the impetus to explore the learnings acquired through cross-cultural comparisons from decolonial feminist perspectives. In her academic-activist role she recently led students and staff of UCC with Prof Nuala Finnegan to perform a flashmob as a response to gender-based violence. This performance originated in Spanish in Chile, but UCC’s performers translated the lyrics into 12 languages, ensuring the performance and its message of resistance was as accessible to as many people as possible.
Elizabeth Rosales Martínez
Elizabeth Rosales Martínez is a PhD researcher in Translation and Latin American Studies at University College Cork, Ireland. Her research interests include collaborative methods of translation, queer pedagogies, and creative practices of translation.
Elizabeth graduated in Visual Arts at the Faculty of Arts and Design at UNAM. As an artist, she specializes in graphic and pictorial media, as well as art installations. In her artwork she explores themes of identity, body, violence and language.
Hannah Silvester
Dr Hannah Silvester is a lecturer in French, working on translation studies and audiovisual translation. She is co-founder of SubComm, a community of scholars and practitioners with an interest in subtitling. SubComm provides an opportunity for her to develop her activist-academic role, using her experience and resources to support subtitlers in their networking and CPD, and creating space for them to drive research agendas and highlight the biggest challenges they face in their work. She recently co-guest edited a special issue of the Journal of Audiovisual Translation. Exceptionally, the primary audience for the special issue was audiovisual translators, rather than academics. In a co-authored article in the same issue, she advocated for more audiovisual translation academics to take on an activist role and support practitioners in overcoming the challenges they face in their daily work. Her work on the SubComm project includes the project website and blog, which is a central point of information about the community.
